In the West of Ireland where I grew up, stretches of tarmac road through the unspoilt boglands were referred to as ‘The Line’. I was inspired by this term as it implied the most basic of principles for starting an idea. I went back to the ‘The Line’ that I had travelled in my childhood and used its meanings, metaphors, memories of its journeys and quiet beauty. I began this creative journey in 2001, finding a language of expression that paralleled both my inspiration and my absence from this landscape.
Down the Line is a journey I recall again and again; its contents, lines and metaphors deeply etched in my own personal history.
